Full house again at the 2nd Windows Phone Developer After-Work in Vienna – 29 developers participated, filling our event location at the Tieto Austria offices to the brim. We had two sessions from expert speakers – Thomas Mutzl and Vladimir Vilchinsky. Slides & demo projects are now available for download and we have the results of the app pitching contests and your feedback ready!
Focus Sessions
Vladimir showcased how you can create your own custom layouts using XAML for Windows 8 & Windows Phone. In many situations, the standard layouts provided by the platform do not suit the needs. Together with many practical tips, Vladimir presented two real showcases: a timeline panel, as well as a radial panel. You can find the slides with some background info, as well as the demo projects that include the source code for these controls in his download package!
Thomas was talking about MVVM – Beyond the Basics and showcased how you can make an app that really uses the advantages of the MVVM architechture, but at the same time is not more effort for you as a developer and doesn’t fill up the code with lots of glue between the model, view model and the view. He also included countless tips and tricks that make your life as Visual Studio 2013 developer easier!
App Pitching Contest
After the two focus sessions, six participating developers took the chance to pitch their apps – two minutes, free style! All attendees got to vote for their top three apps. The results have been very close:
- Andreas Jakl – NFC Library (35 points)
- Tobias Krasinger – Connectivity Map (34 points)
- Felix Wagner – Get Me Out (20 points)
- Christoph Wille – Vienna RealTime (20 points)
- Otmar Pilgerstorfer – Uhr Verkehrt (16 points)
- Georg Perhofer – Shopping List (19 points)
The NFC library took the first place by a very close margin of one point – but as it came from one of the organizers, Tobias Krasinger got the price of a Nokia Lumia 820 Developer Device to take home with him – congratulations! The 3rd and 4th places were a tie, so we actually had four winners, who each get 250 XP for DVLUP. Places 5 and 6 get 150 XP.
DVLUP and Next Steps
Save the date: the next Windows Phone Developer After-Work will be happening on May 7th, 2014. We have a lot of great ideas on how to make the next event even bigger and better – stay tuned!
All participants of the 2nd After-Work will get their code for the 50 DVLUP XP for attending the event per mail in the following days! Don’t forget to check out the photos of the developer after-work, which we have uploaded on Flickr!
Attendee Feedback
